NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said India supports the expansion of Brics (Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa) to include new nations and is ready to move forward on the issue with consensus. “We must make our societies future-ready to make Brics future-ready,” PM Modi said at the five-nation summit.
Speaking at the plenary session, PM Modi suggested several areas where the Brics partners could cooperate and work together. He praised the journey of Brics so far and said, “In around two decades, Brics has undertaken a long and magnificent journey in which we made numerous achievements.”
PM Modi hoped that India’s proposal to make the African Union a permanent member of the G20 will be supported by Brics member nations.
PM Modi welcomed the move to give special importance to countries of the Global South under the South African presidency of the Brics and said “We wholeheartedly welcome the move to give special importance to countries of global south under South Africa’s Brics presidency.” “New Development Bank of Brics playing important role in development of Global South,” he added.
Earlier, as PM Modi reached for the plenary session, he noticed Indian Tricolour on the ground during the group photo at BRICS, picked it up and kept it with him to ensure no one stepped on it.
